چکیده

V-type asteroids in the inner Main Belt (a < 2.5 AU) and the HED meteorites are thought to be genetically related to one another as collisional fragments from the surface of the large basaltic asteroid 4 Vesta. We investigate this relationship by comparing the near-infrared (0.7−2.5 μm) spectra of 39 V-type asteroids to laboratory spectra of HED meteorites. The central wavelengths and areas spanned by the 1 and 2 μm pyroxene-olivine absorption bands that are characteristic of planetary basalts are measured for both the asteroidal and meteoritic data. The band centers are shown to be well correlated, however the ratio of areas spanned by the 1 and 2 μm absorption bands are much larger for the asteroids than for the meteorites. We argue that this offset in band area ratio is consistent with our currently limited understanding of the effects of space weathering, however we can not rule out the possibility that this offset is due to compositional differences. Several other possible causes of this offset are discussed. Amongst these inner Main Belt asteroids we do not find evidence for nonVestoid mineralogies. Instead, these asteroids seem to represent a continuum of compositions, consistent with an origin from a single differentiated parent body. In addition, our analysis shows that V-type asteroids with low inclinations (i < 6◦) tend to have band centers slightly shifted towards long wavelengths. This may imply that more than one collision on Vesta’s surface was responsible for producing the observed population of inner belt V-type asteroids. Finally, we offer several predictions that can be tested when the Dawn spacecraft enters into orbit around Vesta in the summer of 2011.

Almahata Sitta (=asteroid 2008 TC3) and the search for the ureilite parent body

This article explores what the recovery of 2008 TC3 in the form of the Almahata Sitta meteorites may tell us about the source region of ureilites in the main asteroid belt. An investigation is made into what is known about asteroids with roughly the same spectroscopic signature as 2008 TC3. A population of low-inclination near-Earth asteroids is identified with spectra similar to 2008 TC3. Five...

Two new basaltic asteroids in the Outer Main Belt

Aims. The identification of other basaltic objects in the asteroid belt is mandatory to explain the diversity in the collection of basaltic meteorites. This diversity requires more than one differentiated parent body, a fact that is consistent with the diversity of differentiated parent bodies implied by the iron meteorites. Methods. Based on a list of previously identified candidate basaltic (...

An anomalous basaltic meteorite from the innermost main belt.

Triangulated observations of fireballs allow us to determine orbits and fall positions for meteorites. The great majority of basaltic meteorites are derived from the asteroid 4 Vesta. We report on a recent fall that has orbital properties and an oxygen isotope composition that suggest a distinct parent body. Although its orbit was almost entirely contained within Earth's orbit, modeling indicat...

Early Impact History and Dynamical Origin of Differentiated Meteorites and Asteroids

Laboratory studies of igneously formed meteorites suggest that numerous meteorite parent bodies were melted to form metallic cores and silicate mantles. Studies by the Dawn spacecraft confirm that (4) Vesta melted in this way (McSween et al., 2013; see the chapter by Russell et al. in this volume). In principle, one would think the origin of iron and stonyiron meteorites and achondrites would b...

Production of Cosmic Dust by Hydrous and Anhydrous Asteroids: Implications for the Production of Interplanetary Dust Particles and Micrometeorites. G

Introduction: In our Solar System the asteroid belt is compositionally zoned, with the asteroids similar in reflection spectrum to the carbonaceopus meteorites dominating the outer-half of the main belt. In the outer-half of the main belt about one-half of the carbonaceous asteroids are hydrous, based on their infrared spectra [1]. The asteroids in the inner-half of the main belt are predominan...
